Ogham stone

Here we have a picture of an Ogham stone outside Kilmakedar church near Dingle. Have a look at the “carvings” on the side of the rock. You’ll find many examples of these carvings in the southwest of the country.

Have you heard of Ogham writing? Its the earliest form of written Irish – typically from about the 4th century onwards. Mostly inscribed on stones (at least that’s the writing that survived) – and often referring to a person associated with an area. The characters are named after the trees you typically find in Ireland.
