CĂ©ad mĂle fáilte, welcome to your Letter from Ireland “Shorts”.  Each Tuesday we’ll bring you a quick-read of some of our favourite and interesting Irish things for this week.

FAVOURITE PLACES IN IRELAND
Strokestown House, County Roscommon.
Home to the National Famine Museum, Strokestown house has an incredible history. Here is Carina speaking with the manager telling the amazing story of the house and garden.

FEATURED IRISH SURNAME
Our Irish surname of the week is McMahon. it comes from “Mac Mathghamha” which means “son of the Bear”. The McMahon name largely comes from two historical families – one was located in Clare and the other from the area of Armagh, Monaghan, South Down, Louth and Fermanagh. To see where the name appears in Ireland in the mid 1800s go to this page on Johngrenham.com

BOOK I’M READING NOW
“Bake: Traditional Irish Baking with Modern Twists” by Graham Herterich.
Graham takes beloved Irish recipes like soda bread and porter cake and spins them with modern flavours available in Ireland today. Imagine a classic coffee and walnut cake turned into a pavlova with coffee poached pears! See the book here.

IRISH WORD OR PROVERB

Bíonn siúlach scéalach
(pronounced “Bee-on shoo-luck shkay-luck“)

Which translates to “The traveller has many stories”.

I know travelling around Ireland has certainly fuelled many of my letters.

IRISH CRAFT/PRODUCT WE LOVE

We love to help with Irish ancestry research over in the Green Room. But My Ireland Tour takes it one step further by taking you on a personal tour of the locations that connect you to your personal Irish ancestry. They’re an independent business just down the road from us here in Cork and I’d recommend checking out their facebook page for pictures of their past tours. How about you – have you ever been on a trip with this company? We’d love to hear what you thought.

My Ireland Tour
