Your Letter from Ireland shorts from the 4th of March 2025
Cรฉad mรญle fรกilte, welcome to your Letter from Ireland “Shorts”. Each Tuesday we’ll bring you a quick-read of some of our favourite and interesting Irish things for this week.
FAVOURITE PLACES IN IRELAND
Trim Castle, County Meath. (See it on a map here.)
Rising majestically above the River Boyne, Trim Castle stands as Ireland’s largest Anglo-Norman fortress. Built in 1173 by Hugh de Lacy, this mighty stronghold – with its massive 20-sided keep and sprawling curtain walls – has witnessed centuries of Irish history and even starred as a backdrop in the film “Braveheart.” Check out this video for a brief and interesting look into the castle’s history.

Have you ever heard of “The Tribes of Galway”? Maybe your family came from one of these tribes. In this article, we look at one particular group of โTribesโ in Ireland – see if you can spot your own surname in the mix! Read about the Tribes of Galway here.
BOOK I’M READING NOW
“Listen to the Land Speak” by Manchรกn Magan
Manchรกn Magan is a wonderfully imaginative writer who centers nature and its connection to Irish language and folklore in his work. This book follows the author as he explores Ireland’s deep connection to nature through the eyes of our ancestors, from the bogs to the mountains. He looks at how the old Irish society was built around people who really understood nature – like poets, healers, and monks who saw the land as alive and sacred.ย Check out the book on Amazon.ย
IRISH WORD OR PROVERB
“Slรกinte is tรกinte”
Which translates to “Health and wealth.” And to you as well!
