Secret Artists, Doagh Famine Village and Royal Surnames…

Céad míle fáilte, welcome to your Letter from Ireland “Shorts”.  Each Tuesday we’ll bring you a quick-read of some of our favourite and interesting Irish things for this week.

FAVOURITE PLACES IN IRELAND
Doagh Famine Village, County Donegal.

Travel to the tip of the Inishowen peninsula in the far north of Ireland and you will find the time-capsule that is the Doagh famine village. See this tour of a one bedroom cottage given by a man who lived there as a child with 6 other family members.

FEATURED IRISH SURNAMES – The Royal Families of Ireland

Ireland used to be ruled by many “Rí” (ree) or Kings. Was your surname one of these royal surnames? Click here to see more.

BOOK I’M READING NOW

Coming Home: One Man’s Return to the Irish Language”  by Michael McCaughan. A recommendation from one of our Green Room members: “This book is fascinating. After many years away from Ireland, speaking Spanish, he moved back and dove deeply into learning Irish. He talks about the best approaches he has found, and about the varying attitudes of Irish people about the language.” Click here to see the book on amazon.

IRISH WORD OR PROVERB

“Beidh lá eile ag an bPaorach”

Which translates to “Power (which is also an Irish surname) will have another day”. If things have not gone well for you today, this is a friendly reminder that you’ll have a chance again another day!

IRISH CRAFT/PRODUCT WE LOVE

Incognito is Ireland largest online art sale and goes live on April the 4th. Every year people purchase a piece of art for €65 and the identity of the artist is only revealed after the piece has been received. Famous past artists include Bono, Bruce Springsteen and Tracy Emin. The initiative aims to raise funds for the Jack and Jill Children’s foundation, a great cause while giving you a chance to collect a rare piece of art for a bargain or to just find something you like while helping out a good cause.
