How would you like to sail across the atlantic in this little boateen?
When I was a young fellow, I went to school in Crosshaven in County Cork – and one day we visited the local boatyard where Tim Severin was building this exact boat – a replica of the boat that Saint Brendan is thought to have travelled to North America in the 6th century.
Severin built this boat and following in the footsteps of Brendan – set out to see if such a voyage was possible in such a small boat – basically a currach with sails. It was – and the results can be read in “The Brendan Voyage” – you can also find clips from his fascinating documentaries on youtube.
And now that the boat has been preserved – I think it’s weathering a bit better than I am
